Mens Cup

Our Senior Cup Team travelled up the Highway to take on the Nelson Bay Marlins in beautiful conditions at Dick Burwell Oval. We were fortunately able to cheer on our Plate woman’s team playing their first Official Match before us and they certainly got off to a great start!

Our Men got off to a slow start with Nelson Bay taking advantage of their first forward entry and kicking the first Goal of the Match. To their Credit, the kids took it to us in the first 10 minutes before we got going and started to hit the score board. 7 goals in each of the first 2 quarters from as many forward entry’s set us up for a comfortable victory, despite Nelson bay starting the better of both teams in all 4 quarters.

Our new look Forward line of Danny Priest, Blaire Boyle, Jeremiah Blacklock-Cutmore and Brad Moore functioned efficiently off the back of some strong work in the midfield with new recruit Ryan Thomas working hard off the Wing.

We struggled to take advantage of our opportunity’s in the 3rd with Nelson Bay increasing pressure on the Ball Carrier and forcing Forwards wide for shots, resulting in 4.12 kicked in the 3rd. To round out the Game with another 7 goal Final quarter and keeping the Bay to 2 goals was a massive achievement and we were well serviced in our backline by leadership group members Mattie Vukovich, Jack Pratt and B.O.G Tom Lashlie with a Huge 4 quarter effort by Tim Brown at Fullback.

Womens Cup

Round 1 is finally here!

After what has been an incredibly busy preseason we made it to the start of round 1. This preseason has been pretty huge for the birds as we welcomed the inclusion of some 30 odd new players into the group. We’ve seen new girls arrive up from our Premiership winning u17s team, returning past players along with a bunch of girls who are brand new to footy and just keen to give it a try.

First up saw the cup team take on Lake Macquarie at their home base in Teralba. We were fortunate to get a look at the Dockers in our trial game and the girls used that experience to good use.

Right from the first bounce, it was all hawks as the girls quickly got the jump on lake Macquarie to score within the first 30s of the game. The rest of the quarter was an energetic tussle with our strong midfield of Clare, Sophie, Dee and Shez controlling the game. Up forward, Tayla was directing the forward line and taking strong marks at will, while Emily and April were creating opportunities and getting on the scoreboard themselves.

End of 1st quarter 0 – 33

The second quarter saw the Dockers regroup and respond much stronger to score 1 goal to our 2 for the term. Up forward Moff and Min started working together to create opportunities for each other, while down back the girls held strong and were rebounding any attacks from the Dockers. On the wings, our young brigade of Beth of Georgia were continually creating fantastic opportunities for our forwards.

Halftime score 6 – 60

The rest of the game became a bit of a whitewash as our strong work rate gradually wore down the opposition. New hawks Hannah and Banno held strong in the backline, with Banno creeping up for a sneaky goal in the last. Up forward in her first game of AFL Maddy, showed off her classy marking and kicking skills, bagging her first goal in style.

End of 3rd quarter 6 – 98

In the end, the score blew out, but it was a solid game for our girls and a great chance to get to know some new team members and put into practice all the hard we have been doing this offseason.

Final score  6 -156

Mens Plate

Footy returned a big way for the Hawks this weekend as our Men’s Plate took on the Lake Mac Dockers at Tulkaba Park. After a preseason which yielded heavier numbers than past years, the Hawks welcomed a number of debutants in a special moment for those 6 players being presented with their jerseys by key personnel in the Hawks boys premiership from 2020.

The first quarter got off to a slow start it’s fair to say. We’ll blame that on the premiership hangover. However, our class through the middle remained with reigning League BnF winner, Dave Graan, running red hot out of the gates. Another welcome addition to Hawks Plate side was Mick Ryan who showed he’s still playing some of his best footy capping off a first qtr 2 goals. The third was slotted by our debutant Andrew Bridge, who was given the difficult task of playing Centre Half Forward.

The second quarter followed much of the same pattern with the Dockers matching our Hawks in the contested possession stats. Again, classed reigned through with 2 goals to Dave Graan. However, the Dockers hit back in quick succession with 2 of the next goals and Hawks went into the halftime break with a reduced lead.

With a less than satisfactory effort to halftime, a fiery address at halftime and some re-arrangement of magnets resulted in a standout quarter from our midfielders, particularly Joel Campbell, got the Hawks back on track. This produced a 7 goal to 2 3rd quarter which built a sizeable lead with Mick Ryan, Drew Bridge and the ‘Big Marn’ Andrew Walker getting amongst the goals.

The fourth quarter was tough one as the heavy legs and fatigue set in. James Rinkin put his body (or face) on the line which resulted in another of Andrew Walker’s goals, leaving him with a haul of 5 for the day and stitches for Rinks. The fitness of Miles Peterson and another debutant Sam Hackett shone through, especially with both of them having standout performances in the last quarter. And they were backed up by admirable performance in his return to the ruck position by Hamish Thomson.

All in all, plenty of positive signs for the Hawks, whilst we look forward to a Round 2 match up against the Gosford Tigers.
