Hawks host AFL Orientation Session at the University of Newcastle

The Cardiff Hawks Australian Football Club will host an AFL Orientation Session at the University of Newcastle Callaghan campus on Tuesday

The orientation will feature an open training activity with prospective and experienced players or people who may be participating in other sports and are interested in experiencing Australian Football most welcome to join in the session.

A Bit About the Cardiff Hawks:

The Cardiff Hawks have been around since 1968 and presently play out of Hillsborough Oval at Percy Street, Hillsborough.

The club were runners-up in the Black Diamond AFL first grade competition last season and won the 2017 reserve grade minor and major titles.

The Hawks also field a women’s senior team and have a very strong junior club.

Sydney Swans star Isaac Heeney is a Cardiff Hawks Junior and learned his football at our Hillsborough “Hawks Nest”.

The Hawks and UoN:

The Hawks participated in the UoN Orientation Week in 2016 where they conducted multiple open training sessions on campus that generated a lot of interest and saw a good number of students try AFL for the first time. The club has a lot of UoN students and alumni in its ranks including 2017 BDAFL Most Valuable Player Marcus DeLeur who is presently studying a medical degree.

Cardiff Australian Football Club President Quinton Davis says the relationship between the University and his club is a mutually beneficial one as AFL is one of the very few sports that isn’t readily available on campus.

“Our club is pleased to be able to work with the UoN as a conduit for students that may be interested in playing AFL” Mr Davis said. “It’s a game that is suited to people of all shapes, sizes and skillsets and besides offering an outlet for players who enjoy competitive sport it also is suitable for people who may just want to keep fit or are looking for a social outlet” Mr Davis added.
